BRIDGESTONE

“For the welfare and happiness of all mankind.” - Shōjirō Ishibashi, founder of the Bridgestone Corporation.

From starting out making traditional Japanese sandals in 1925, to moving onto manufacturing tires in 1931 and then in 1945 producing bicycles the Bridgestone Corporation has largely concerned itself with moving people.

By the 1980’s Bridgestone had proven itself to be very competent at producing sport bikes and with the addition of Grant Peterson as BridgestonUSA’s marketing director the company has firmly planted itself in the hearts of many. It was under Peterson’s watch that Bridgestone focused its attention on making bikes for utility and purpose, and not just as a wall decoration or garage sculpture. Biking in America at this time had largely been for competition or sport, but in Grant’s own words, “The best use of a bicycle is commuting, it’s not racing or competing or recreation or anything like that. Ultimately its best use is getting cars off the roads.” and it’s with that philosophy that Bridgestone has established a legacy that continues to enrich cycling culture even today.

Incidentally Shōjirō Ishibashi translates as “stone bridge”.

Grand Velo 2000

In 1985, one year after Grant Peterson joined the company, Bridgestone released onto the world the Grand Velo 2000.

While marketed for triathletes the bike’s construction using high quality lightweight steel, and investment cast lug design, makes it perfectly suitable for everyday riding. Sporting high quality Suntour Superbe Pro components, this bike was second from top of the line in Bridgestone’s 1985 catalog.

Our Grand Velo 2000 we have in shop is about 90% original, with only the seat, stem, and handlebars having been replaced. It still has all of the Suntour Superbe Pro Components, the original Sugino ALP crankset, and the gold anodized Araya 700c wheels.
